David and Madeline's home dates back to the 1400’s with 16th century alterations. It is a classic example of the difficulties a listed historic property poses in combining conservation with modern standards of insulation, comfort and reduced energy consumption. Further additions in the Victorian era created problems with shoddy workmanship, the use of pine and worst of all cement!

Bought in 2002 as a retirement project which took 18 years at a cost of £151,000 it was in urgent need of complete renovation. The roof was removed and rebuilt using where necessary reclaimed timber. From the outset renovations were made to make the house as carbon neutral as possible, with reduced energy bills and the coming demands of climate change in mind. The order of the work was prioritised; total new electrical system of house and outbuildings, all leaded lights removed, rebuilt and replaced with double glazed units behind, total replumbing with every room now heated to appropriate levels, internal panelling restored, complete new sewage system and multifueled stoves installed beneath the two ancient chimneys. The majority of the work was done by David himself with a massive learning curve along the way. They now have a dry, comfortable historic home and the future of this historic house is assured. Replacing the oil boiler with a zero carbon alternative and a P.V.  array on a south facing outbuilding would complete the journey, but the latter has twice been opposed by the Planning Authority because of its listed status.

LED lighting throughout, oil condensing boiler (no gas in the village) bee friendly garden, electricity consumption 7077kW p.a. Well worth a visit to see that even a 600 year old property can be brought up to modern levels of comfort and energy efficiency.

A more detailed description of the project is on the Stretton Climate Care website.
